II. Short-Term Certificate Courses

Short-Term Courses are a means through which individuals acquire information and skills to build their capacities in order to fulfil their own development objectives over time. In India, the human resource development programs in the area of disability rehabilitation typically focus on specific disabilities. Hence, disability professionals are trained either in intellectual disability or visual impairment or learning disability or hearing impairment etc. But once employed, they are expected to work with all children with special needs. Many of them feel the need to obtain and strengthen their knowledge about disabilities other than the one in which they have specialized. The Short-Term Courses at Suvidya are designed to meet this need.

a) Certificate Course in Autism

is a capacity building program for professionals, and parents of children with autism. The Course purports to develop an understanding about the nature and needs of children with autism, and focuses on availing hands on experience of working with such children. demands.

Suvidya College of Special Education runs a Certificate Course in Specific Learning Disability to upscale teacher’s knowledge and skills to provide suitable education to children with SLD effectively in inclusive classroom. c) Course in Shadow Teaching

With the implementation of the Right to Education Act, many children with disabilities are given admission in general schools. However, schools often request that the child be supported by a person to cope with the demands of the curriculum. Such a person, also called ‘shadow teacher’ is expected to help the child within the classroom.

The Certificate Course in Shadow Teaching has been designed to address the need of supporting inclusive education of children with disabilities. It aims to provide the knowledge and skills required by a shadow teacher. The objective is to develop competence and capacity by orienting a course participant to nature and needs of children with disabilities, and exposing him/her to appropriate teaching and management strategies required to help such children.
